Holding Space for Your Heart

Dear Ones,

As we move into the summer months, when all is growing into lush vibrancy and vitality, I can’t help but think about all that it takes for our flora and fauna to reach this point, especially when we are moving through the heatwaves, droughts, and other elements of nature that impact growth.

What do we do for our gardens, the animals, the birds, when faced with these conditions? Sometimes, we attempt to hurry it along, becoming dismayed with the obviously slowed progress. At other times, we might feel into the needs of nature and provide nourishment—water, food, and shade.

It is in this idea that I’d like to share an invitation to hold space for our hearts, as we are quite similar when it comes to our growth. This delicate process is often overshadowed by our insatiable quest for progress, a relentless push to become more, to achieve, to transcend our current state—to bloom. Yet, true growth, the kind that nourishes our soul, requires a different approach—a tender, patient, and compassionate embrace.

The Myth of Immediate Transformation

We live in a culture that venerates speed and efficiency. The myth of immediate transformation is seductive, promising that with the right mindset or strategy, we can leapfrog over our struggles straight into the arms of success. But this myth neglects the reality of our human experience. Authentic growth is not a sprint; it is a pilgrimage, one that meanders through valleys of self-doubt, forests of old wounds, and deserts of uncertainty.

The Heart’s Whisper

Our hearts often speak in whispers, nudging us gently toward what we need to face, heal, and integrate. When we ignore these whispers, rushing past our pain or pushing through discomfort, we lose touch with our own precious and potent wisdom that resides within. Holding space for our hearts means listening to these whispers, acknowledging our wounds, and honoring our journey.

Cultivating Tender Space

To hold space for your heart is to create a sanctuary within, where all parts of yourself are welcome. This involves several practices:

1. Mindful Presence: Engage in practices that ground you in the present moment, such as meditation, journaling, or simply breathing deeply. This helps quiet the mind and allows the heart’s whispers to be heard.
2. Compassionate Self-Talk: Replace self-critical thoughts with compassionate affirmations. Remind yourself that growth is a process and that you are doing the best you can.
3. Allowing Emotions: Give yourself permission to feel your emotions fully. Whether it’s joy, sorrow, anger, or fear, each emotion is a messenger from your heart, guiding you toward deeper understanding.
4. Rituals of Care: Engage in rituals that nurture your spirit. This could be spending time in nature, creating art, or connecting with loved ones. These rituals remind you of your inherent worth and the sacredness of your journey.

Embracing the Journey

Holding space for your heart is a tender way to respond to the external conditions affecting it and replenishing what it is asking for, with your own wisdom. It is not about achieving perfection or rushing to the finish line for the “big bloom”.

It is about honoring your unique process, embracing your humanity, and allowing yourself to unfold naturally.

In this tender space, you will discover that your heart knows the way. Trust in its guidance, be gentle with your progress, and allow the beauty of your journey to emerge in its own time.
